Phonics
Reading and therefore Phonics are at the heart of everything we do at Riddings.
We use the Read Write Inc (RWI) Phonic Programme throughout school, from Reception through to Year 2. Our Nursery children are also introduced to the scheme using the RWI Nursery Programme from the Spring Term onwards as most of our Nursery children go on to join us in our Reception classes.
The RWI Programme is supported at home through the use of RWI Book Bag Books, which all children have access to as soon as they begin blending words in school.
We have daily phonics sessions in the morning where we group the children across year groups according to their specific progress and targets. We also have additional phonics sessions in class at the end of everyday to practice our blending, sound recognition, and fluency. Children who may be falling behind are identified early and they are given additional support in the form of 1:1 tutoring or access to a virtual classroom.
Children are regularly assessed throughout school by our Phonics Lead and regrouped accordingly to ensure the best possible progress and outcomes. Year 1 children are also assessed in the Summer Term in line with the National Phonic Screening Check.
