Nursery

We encourage all parents to be actively involved in their child’s learning from the moment they start in our school.

In the Autumn and Summer terms Rob Bounds our Travel Smart Champion comes into school to work with our nursery children on developing balance and coordination using balance bikes.

We have a visiting Pantomime in December and workshops from Derby Open Centre linked to marriage in other cultures.

In the Spring term we hatch our own chicken eggs, this is a wonderful experience for the children. We alternate between traditional tales / Chinese New Year workshops during this term too.

In the Summer term we take part in the ‘Smoothie bike’ workshops, promoting healthy choices in school. To support the children’s developing knowledge and understanding we have Science workshops alternating with Multicultural workshops.

To end our year in nursery we have a ‘soft play’ day where the children get to experience a range of soft play in our school setting.

Reception

In the Autumn we have workshops run by the Derby Open Centre linked to marriage in other cultures. We also have a visit from the Road Safety team, focusing on how to cross the road safely and then a fabulous Pantomime visiting in December!

During the Spring term the children have Caterpillars in class to learn about and observe their life cycle. Scooter smart sessions are run to develop safe and controlled use of scooters. We also alternate between traditional tales / Chinese New Year workshops this term too.

In the Summer Term, to  support the children’s developing knowledge and understanding we have Science workshops alternating with Multicultural workshops. At the end of the school year the children visit A Farm as part of their topic work.

The children have the opportunity to take part in a variety of after school clubs throughout the year.

Year 1

In the Autumn term grandparents are invited into school as part of the children’s History project to share their wealth of knowledge. Every year the children visit Mansfield Pantomime at Christmas time too.

The children participate in a local walk down to the church as part of their RE curriculum and have a super Fun day and Picnic at the Community Park. We also actively encourage visitors linked to our curriculum to talk to the children ie local Pastor, Australian resident.

Key Stage one children visit the Church for special events and the representatives from local churches visit on a regular basis to lead assemblies.

Inter-generational activities

At Riddings Infant and Nursery School we feel it important for our children to be exposed to people of all ages. We encourage activities where children have to ask questions about their own families, handing down wisdom and knowledge from generations. We take opportunities to invite Grandparents in, whether as part of our history lessons or just for a Kit Kat and a chat.

After School Clubs

All the children have the opportunity to take part in a variety of after school clubs throughout the year.

After school clubs are beneficial for children of all ages giving opportunities for children to learn new skills and socialise with a variety of children from other classes too.
